Week 15 self portrait

Self portrait
Vincent VanGogh
The art institute of Chicago

Self Portrait Drawing at a Window
Rembrandt
The art institute of Chicago

Frederick Douglas
Samuel Miller
The art institute of Chicago

I selected these influential pieces because they were all portraits of people who directly influenced history. Though Rembrandt and VanGogh were strictly influential in art Frederick Douglas was a leader of the abolitionist movement.

I selected my media because I thought it created a cool effect on my picture. This specific time was a memorable night and I think the media I used highlight and embodied the emotions into the art work.

I think my hardest challenge with this project was choosing a media I liked, I knew that drawing was not an option for me from the beginning so it seemed digital was my best choice.

This piece represents me because it's vibrant and it's full of life in a way which perfectly embodies my personality.

I did enjoy working on this though it was a bit time consuming I liked creating my own portrait.

Week 15 video

The first video I chose was Greenburg on art criticism: An interview by TJ Clark. This was an interview with Clement Greenburg, he expressed his art through abstract expressionism. This interview discussed the critique of art as well as the different interpretations of art. The second video The Critics discusses the ways that the public perceives art and the types of criticisms received. It talks about the weight of the publics perceptions on art. This video also speaks on how criticism and explanations of art go hand in hand. Both videos helped to better understand the importance of criticisms of art. They give knowledge on how critiquing art is properly executed. These videos also helped to understand how to give better feedback regarding art. I think both films were helpful on better understanding the idea of critiquing art. They add depth to understanding art criticism and public perceptions of art.

Project 4

I think definitely the hardest part for me was staying within the realms of my topic. There were so many pieces of art I liked and wanted to include that didn't exactly fit my title and halfway through the project I didn't like my title anymore and wanted to change it. Other than that I thought It was kind of fun, I got to see a lot of interesting art while looking for pieces to add to my project. The first thing I did was collect all of the pieces and information for my project then I decided how I wanted to organize it. I completed the project in one day, as soon as I got moving I found it very easy to complete.

The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art - Some of the key concepts for this video were pop music and it’s correlation to art, Art historians call it “pop surrealism “while practitioners call it “lowbrow”. Within lowbrow art, there is a lot of humor, sexuality, and action. Everyone even the misfits were welcome in Lowbrow art. Displaying Modern Art: The Tate Approach- This video talks a lot about modernist and their that helped shape modernized museums. It discussed the concepts on deciding the displayed sense of art. Many different types of pieces also may come together to make up a collection. Majority of the Art is Western European, and North American. Bones of Contention: Native American Archaeology- This video talked about archeological sites all over the US, and showed the remains of Native Americans. it talks about Native Americans and artwork they created before the genocide. Acquiring Mind: Philippe de Montebello and The Metropolitan Museum of Art- This video talked about Philippe de Montebello, who was the Director of the Metropolitan Museum of art. This video showed the inner workings of the Museum of modern art and what it takes to run a successful museum. These videos don't really relate to my exhibit. Although interesting my exhibit explores dark paintings depicting the devil and spirits, gruesome morbid works of art. The videos are helpful in providing background on these subjects.

The first video I chose was Hockney on photography, of all art sub categories photography would be the one most interesting to me. The second video I chose was Andy Warhol: images of an image because I've heard of him but don't know too much about him and would like to know more.

Hockney on photography talks a bit about the origin of photography. The theory around it and putting images on to flat surfaces. It talks about perspective and how we look at art. The Andy Warhol video talks about his creation of a new image type utilizing negative and positive contrasts.

Both films were interesting and I definitely learned more information. It went deeper into certain parts of the texts and explored the themes in the book we studied.

I didn't exactly choose the videos for any specific reason, but allowed myself to learn more on subjects that I wasn't as sure on.

Matisse and Picasso

The film documents the relationship between two personae: Matisse and Picasso. Matisse put most of his time and energy into his art; he did not socialize much.Picasso paints objects he may have seen years ago or his perception of everyday things such as fruit or a table.During the wars they both continued to create pieces. Picasso painted some of the darkness whereas Matisse had not. Matisse continued to paint bright pieces containing fruit and other non-harmful objects.

DADA

The Dada movement was a reaction to World War l. Artist Kurt Schwitters realized the unlimited possibilities of collage, used rural objects in his art, and light dances off of his objects. DADA was a subversive and revolutionary state of being that embodied the idea of organized chaos. It is a public execution of false morality.

These videos relate to the text because they elaborate more into the artists specifically.

I think the films helped me grasp more the concepts of each movement. It gave me a deeper look into the historically events that were occurring. It helped me gauge a better perspective on each artist.

Mod 10 video blog

Buddhism I chose the video Buddhism because the life a findings behind the religion interesting. The idea of time being cyclical and in sending lives. This video talks about the beginning of Buddhism, as well as the use of architecture and art. Some key concepts from the Buddhism movie were torana, the door to understanding the gateway to the temple. Sanchi which was the center of the art and architecture for Buddhism. People must rid themselves of all desires. The chapter relates to this video because it tells the history of Buddha himself as well as the history surrounding the religion. African art The second video I chose was African art. Some of the key concepts from this video were Aesthetic sense is shown in dress, hair styles, forms of ornamentation, rituals and performance art. African art influence Picasso and Modernist painters. This video related to the book as well because we read about the influence of African arts and culture.

Module 9 art exploration

1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing? I found it very difficult to use my hands as drawing subject matter. 2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why? I used pencil because it was easier to erase if I made a mistake and it was readily available to me 3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand? This was extremely difficult for me because I do not use my dominant hand at all for any writing purposes so even holding a pencil seemed difficult. 4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies? I think they could have been constructed better but overall I am happy with the out come 5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future? I would not there is definitely a distinguishing factor between my dominant hand drawing and my non dominant hand. photo image_zpsd164d09d.jpg Sent from my iPhone

Module 9

Leonardo Da'vinci: Mind of the renaissance and the drawings of Michelangelo I chose these two videos because prior to these assignments I knew little about these artists and would like to explore them more. Leonardo Da'Vinci: mind of the renaissance - The video talks about how Leonardo makes millions of drawings and sketches for every work that he does and then shakes off the extra things in his art that are not needed anymore as he progresses. The drawings of Michelangelo -Michelangelo made in-depth sketches before actually executing the piece. The video takes the time to closely look at the artist’s pencil and charcoal works with the painting, sculpture, and architecture that grew out of them. His drawings were very in-depth and complicated. The videos relate to the text because in divulges more into the information on mannerism and how it grew out of possibilities suggested by the work of High Renaissance artists. In my own opinion I'm not really into learning through videos I get distracted and don't comprehend as well as I would through text, beside the point the information was interesting and provided a different understanding of the concepts from the book.

Module 8

I chose the video on the Cairo Museum simply because I love learning about ancient Egypt. It would be amazing to see the museum in Cairo, and learn more about the history involving Egypt. More human than human- Some of the key concepts include how we let what images that we see have such an impact on us. How humans made art, and how art shaped humanity. The compulsion to create the human body in art in an unnatural way. The Cairo Mueseum- This video spoke about the history of ancient Egypt. It was a video about the new exhibition about "Hidden Treasures" that is commemorating the museums hundredth birthday. The video relates to the text because the videos reiterate the text as well as going more into depth on these topics. The video's also look specifically and expand on Egyptian and roman architecture which was covered in the readings.

Module 7

In the video Architecture: Design of Science some of the key concepts included the use of concrete in modern day society. She also spoke on the importance of wind tunnel and foundation testing. She discussed the importance of concrete as a building material. For Last Call for Planet Earth we learned about the use and benefits of solar panels. Geothermal technologies and smart technology.

Both videos relate to the text because they give us a deeper understanding in to the content the book only touches on. While speaking on terms and techniques the the book helps us to have a greater understanding.

I liked both films, films allow us to explore certain materials deeper and understand easier. I think that Last Call for Planet Earth was interesting because I've also been curious about the use of alternative energies.

I chose the films I did half randomly and also because the names caught interest with me. I've always been interested in architecture and design and found the people that create skyscrapers amazing.

I thought that both Matched principles with pictures accurately and creatively. In Courtney's' I really enjoyed the puppy fur she used to represent texture. 2).There were not any images the same as my own for project two, I did enjoy "only god knows I'm good" in Courtney's and "Picture Lens" in Jonathans. 3).John Ahearn Pinwheel, 1998 Plaster I loved this piece, I pulled me in, I would have loved to know why the artist created this plaster work and what his message was he was sending. 4). I like peer reviews because it gives me a chance to look at others works and interpretations on similar instructions. I like seeing others opinions and contrasting them with my own. 5). My peers who left me comments at least reassured me that I was not completely lost when completely this project specially for someone who IS NOT art inclined!

Module 6

Some of the concepts I've learned from the video included, Through the eyes of a sculptor: "A sculpture comes alive in clay, dies in plaster and is reborn in marble.” In this video we learn the creative process behind a sculpture. We learn the distinction between craft mans and Artists. Glass and ceramics; This video explains the process behind ceramics and glass art. We learn about the abundance of glass in our environment. ceramics are in just as much of abundance and are commonly known as dishes and bricks. These videos reinforced what was already touched on in the book providing an in depth look at ceramics, glass an sculpturing as well as techniques and methods. I enjoyed the films because they provided more of a visual understanding of the text making it more three dimensional and easier to understand.

Project 2

A). Both paintings use extraordinary color, the evoke a feeling of warmth and strength. They evoke thought into what the artist was feeling when they painted the images. They leave a lasting impression because the color draws the eye but the painting pulls such raw emotion from the viewers. B). I had a hard time feeling a real connection with any of the paintings. The two I chose relate to me because I would imagine the artists were a bit on the scatterbrained side, unorganized. What comes to mind is almost a chicken running around with its head cut off. I would love to know the reasons behind the art from the artists themselves. C). Modern art has always intrigued me because what exactly does it mean. I look at these works and I see 3D touchable art but why? I would love to know more.

Module 4

In creating my logo I found it a bit difficult to decide what I wanted to make. I used pretty much just words and the symbol PC which is incorporated in the last sketch. <\p> what I realized as I created my logo was that it takes a very creative mind to create logos because creativity is what I struggled with in doing this project. From the provided material I learned the process as a whole to creating a logo, including the meaning behind them, the differences between each logo and the creative process. My logo is a made up company using just words. Some of my sketches included symbols but please forgive My lack of artistic ability. photo c3595cb7-8e50-4804-a5b0-7c44a3c9c94e_zpse7167136.jpg

Project 1

jessicaperri7's album on Photobucket

The elements:

Line- For the element line I used a picture of a fixture in my house that uses for lines to create a square

geometric shape.

Value-For value, I contrasted a picture of a design of different colors to show the different degrees of dark and light.

Shapes-For shapes I used the shade of a lamp that uses metal and glass to create shapes.

Forms- For forms I used the base of a lamp that uses long metal like pipes swirled around to creat a 3D like image.

Space- For space I used a close up of a leaf whit a pattern in the background.

Color- For color I used a picture of an old dress form which shows how color defines lines.

Texture- For texture I used the picture of a curtain with a very rough material and pattern that also appears bubbled almost.

The principles-

Balance-For balance I used a close up of a artificial flower wreath the colors and shapes as well as dimensions created the idea of balance.

Contrast- For contrast I used a picture of a green and yellow leaf with a bit of color effect to move the viewer through the piece.

Movement- for movement I used a glass case filled with different vases and personal items.

Emphasis- For emphasis I used a pattern with a soft focus on a specific part.

Pattern- For pattern I used and old red and swirl wallpaper.

Proportion- For proportion I used a close up on an anyique lamp of an angel.

Unity- For unity I used a picture of a piano with antique vases, a plant perfectly placed and a deer statue that seem to sit perfectly.

I found parts of this project a little difficult as I am not "artfully" inclined hence my criminal justice major. After reading part two of the book I had a bit of an easier time with deciding which pictures fit into which definition and even by accident identifying which pictures fit in more than one category!

Module 3

The effects colors have on people and their emotions can differ for a variety or reasons. Color effect have a cultural bias sometimes for example, red and green are associated with Christmas in most cases. The effect that certain colors would have on different people would depend on the personal link they associate the color with.

The transmission of light represents one aspect of color, its reception by the human eye represents the other. This is interesting because based on you personally colors may not appear exactly the same shade, brightness or hue of that of the person next to you. As light strikes the retina, the light-receptive area at the back of the eye, it is recorded by rods and cones.

I found the reaction of the painter most fascinating. It would seem the priority of the painting was to make the piece of art invoke feeling from the viewers through her use of color. Even at times she was visibly frustrated when the colors weren't to her liking.

I think that Rhothko's reasoning behind his red paintings was the most interesting aspect. He painted in deep reds to dissatisfy the viewer in his own disgust.

Module 2

For each video and article list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Aesthetics: philosophy of the arts-

There are many different theories on aesthetics. Aesthetics are the philosophical study of art. The video discusses the different theories philosophers have developed throughout time on the ideas of beauty. Kant theorized the correlation between judgement and beauty for example.

Carta-

This video explores the neurobiological aspects of art. Works of art communicate nonverbal expressions evoking emotions and knowledge. Art is always growing and changing, It's interesting to see the effects of art on the brain.

CNN-

This article goes on to explain how the human brain recognizes art by making sense of lines and colors etc.. There are certain aspects that make art appealing, symmetry for example is widely recognized as beautiful and symmetry in art, the brain recognizes it as a possible living thing.

Which philosopher's theroy on aesthetics do you feel is most important? Be sure to mention the philosphers name, era (time in history), and contribution to the aesthetic theory in your response.

Kant-

Immanuel Kant came to be in the 18th century. I believe Kant's theory of judgement And beauty was the most important contribution to aesthetics. He talks about The correlation between judgements, and is beauty only beauty because we judge it to be?

What do you think about Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art? What was the most interesting fact you discovered from each speakers lecture?

Both view art with a scientific background and explanation. I think the most interesting facts from changeux were the evolutionary background to art that we have. The most interesting fact from ramachandra was the expirement of teaching the shapes to rats and them understanding the rules being taught.

How do the videos and article relate to the readings in the text?

The videos and the text agree by providing different explanations for one common idea on how the brain decides art and our perception of art.

What is your opinion of the films and article? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics in your reading in the text?

I must admit I'm not the biggest fan on videos but all in all the videos provide excellent information on the actual processing of art at the neurological level. This further the learning provided in the book on the perception of art individually.

Blog 1- Art Inquiry

The process of of creating my GMail account and blog was quite easy specially because I already had a Gmail account and was familiar with GMail. I hope to learn everything I possibly can about visual art and artists' and hopefully and able to choose a favorite artist. As for online classes I love them, they can be more work but I think they're worth it. I think you learn more to begin with.
