The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art - Some of the key concepts for this video were pop music and it’s correlation to art, Art historians call it “pop surrealism “while practitioners call it “lowbrow”. Within lowbrow art, there is a lot of humor, sexuality, and action. Everyone even the misfits were welcome in Lowbrow art. The first video I chose was Hockney on photography, of all art sub categories photography would be the one most interesting to me. The second video I chose was Andy Warhol: images of an image because I've heard of him but don't know too much about him and would like to know more.

Hockney on photography talks a bit about the origin of photography. The theory around it and putting images on to flat surfaces. It talks about perspective and how we look at art. The Andy Warhol video talks about his creation of a new image type utilizing negative and positive contrasts.

Both films were interesting and I definitely learned more information. It went deeper into certain parts of the texts and explored the themes in the book we studied.

I didn't exactly choose the videos for any specific reason, but allowed myself to learn more on subjects that I wasn't as sure on.

Matisse and Picasso

The film documents the relationship between two personae: Matisse and Picasso. Matisse put most of his time and energy into his art; he did not socialize much.Picasso paints objects he may have seen years ago or his perception of everyday things such as fruit or a table.During the wars they both continued to create pieces. Picasso painted some of the darkness whereas Matisse had not. Matisse continued to paint bright pieces containing fruit and other non-harmful objects.

DADA

The Dada movement was a reaction to World War l. Artist Kurt Schwitters realized the unlimited possibilities of collage, used rural objects in his art, and light dances off of his objects. DADA was a subversive and revolutionary state of being that embodied the idea of organized chaos. It is a public execution of false morality.

These videos relate to the text because they elaborate more into the artists specifically.

I think the films helped me grasp more the concepts of each movement. It gave me a deeper look into the historically events that were occurring. It helped me gauge a better perspective on each artist.
